japan 1

The first trip for our Canada Council Prix de Rome project was to Japan.

These assorted site-studies are just a glimpse into our travels in Japan — a country with a long history of a disciplined and all-encompassing approach to work and craft.

We researched historical live/work/make precedents, both rural and urban. We visited sites that developed and evolved from simple to complex programs. And we noted where live make spaces were initiated by individual effort, and where neighbourhoods were created with large scale government interventions and private partnerships.
